Jimi Hendrix: Precision, Layers, and Gold in a 30cm Portrait

I recently completed a highly detailed, small-scale commission: a portrait of the legendary Jimi Hendrix on a 30 x 30 cm gold aluminium panel.

This piece was specially commissioned for the husband of a collector who had previously acquired a similar David Bowie portrait from me. Creating a companion piece for a devoted fan is always a privilege!

Working at the 30 x 30 cm size presented a unique challenge, as I aimed to maintain the high level of detail typical of my larger works. This involved creating five separate stencil layers and utilizing a nuanced palette of greyscale tones.

The piece is incredibly detailed—the most minute elements I've worked with in this format—to ensure the iconic features of Hendrix were captured with maximum precision.

The portrait's base is a luxurious gold aluminium panel, which adds a warm, reflective glow. The final touch of luxury was the application of delicate gold flakes to his jacket, echoing the high-contrast lighting and stage presence of the musician. The greyscale tones against the gold background create a striking, sophisticated contrast, perfectly complementing the David Bowie piece already in the collector's possession.
